Carme Rovira, First Woman Honored in Chemistry at Spain’s National Research Awards
Our faculty is proud to celebrate that María del Carme Rovira Virgili, ICREA research professor in the Department of Inorganic and Organic Chemistry and member of the Institute of Theoretical and Computational Chemistry at the University of Barcelona, has become the first woman to receive Spain’s National Research Award in Chemistry.
Rovira Virgili was granted the prestigious Enrique Moles Prize in Chemical Science and Technology for her pioneering contributions in computational chemistry applied to enzymes of biomedical and biotechnological interest. Her work has driven advances in biofuels, gut microbiota research, and the degradation of marine polysaccharides, consolidating her international leadership in the field.
