Predoctoral fellowship – Effects of radiation damage in polymeric materials for aerospace applications
Research contract
More than 60 researchers, experts in several fields of the Theoretical and Computational Chemistry, integrate the Institute of Theoretical and Computational Chemistry of the Universitat de Barcelona (https://www.iqtc.ub.edu/en/). The research activity carried out at the IQTCUB covers methods and computational tools development, application of several techniques of electronic structures and simulation to problems in materials science, the study of reactivity and reaction dynamics in chemical reactions as well as of biological systems and soft-matter.
The IQTCUB is currently accepting applications from post-doctoral researchers who want to join the project led by Professor Pere Alemany: titled “Effects of radiation damage in polymeric materials for aerospace application
Details
A 3-year doctoral fellowship is available. The goal of the research will be to employ state-of-the-art non-adiabatic molecular dynamics (NAMD) techniques, as implemented in the SIESTA code, to study the effect of particle radiation on polymeric materials. Special emphasis will be on lightweight polymeric materials, such as polyetheramide, with a notable radiation attenuation power, which may be suited for shielding applications in the aerospace industry. NAMD simulations will also be used to examine the effect of swift ions interacting with biological polymers such as proteins or DNA in order to shed some light on the first stages of radiation damage on biological tissues from an atomistic point of view.
The position is funded by the Spanish Structures of Excellence MarÃa de Maeztu and will be renewed on a yearly basis.
Requirements
- Master in areas related to physics / chemistry / materials sicience
- Previous experience in computational physics or chemistry will be highly appreciated
