Research Area:
Biocatalysis and drug discovery

Marina I. Giannotti is PhD in Materials Science from the Universidad Nacional de Mar del Plata and the Instituto de Investigaciones en Ciencia y Tecnología de Materiales (INTEMA), Argentina, in 2004. From 2004 to 2007, she was an IIF Marie Curie fellow postdoctoral researcher at the MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology in the University of Twente, The Netherlands, in the group of Prof. Vancso, where she worked on nanotechnology with individual macromolecules and molecular motors. During this period, she specialized in the atomic force microscopy (AFM) based-force spectroscopy approach to study soft matter structure and nanomechanics. Marina moved to Barcelona in 2008 as a CIBER-BBN senior researcher, in the group of Prof. Sanz from the Universitat de Barcelona and the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC). Since then, she has been involved in several projects related to the development of nanosystems for enzyme replacement therapy in lysosomal disorders, as well as in biophysical studies of model and biological membranes, and protein-protein interactions, in health and disease. She has been part time professor (Professora Associada) at the Materials Science and Physical Chemistry Department of the Faculty of Chemistry at UB, where she is now Lecturer professor (Professora Lectora) and researcher since the end of 2024. Marina leads projects related to seeking mechanical biomarkers in lipidoses and collagen-based diseases (rare diseases), among other research interests.
