Biocatalysis and drug discovery
Rafael Franco is Full Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Barcelona since 2014, where he leads the Molecular Neurobiology Laboratory. With a distinguished academic background, including postdoctoral stays at University College London and the Max Planck Institute, and a sabbatical as Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School, his expertise lies in molecular neuropharmacology, particularly in the study of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) and their heteromeric forms.
Recently, Dr. Franco’s laboratory has begun exploring in silico approaches for drug discovery, integrating computational methods to enhance understanding of ligand/receptor and receptor/receptor interactions. He has contributed extensively to advancing neuropharmacological research, with over 500 scientific articles, six patents, and leadership in national and European research projects. In addition to his research activities, he is dedicated to mentoring young scientists and actively collaborates in interdisciplinary efforts to develop innovative therapeutic strategies for neurodegenerative and neurological disorders.
